Privacy Policy

UntangleTabs is a bookmark manager and new tab page for Chrome. It starts with local storage and is being prepared with optional account-based sync and recovery. You choose which mode to use.
The one thing to know: local mode keeps your library in this browser, but local data is not a backup. If the extension, browser profile, or device is lost or reset, that data can be lost too. Export regular backups, or choose optional sync and recovery when it becomes available.
What UntangleTabs stores
To do its job, UntangleTabs saves the things you create directly in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB and the extension's own storage area). This includes:
- Your bookmarks, workspaces, and sections
- Notes and checklist items
- Reminders and their times
- Saved tab sessions
- Your settings, theme, and display name if you enter one
All of this is stored on your device first. In local mode it stays there until you delete it, reset the browser profile, or uninstall the extension. If you later choose sync, the policy shown during opt-in will explain exactly which fields are encrypted and sent.
Local mode today
The current pre-release local mode does not transmit your library to UntangleTabs. Specifically:
- No account required. You can use local mode without signing in.
- No analytics. There is no tracking, telemetry, or usage measurement of any kind.
- No library transmission in local mode. Favicons are provided by Chrome's own favicon feature, not fetched by UntangleTabs.
- No ads. UntangleTabs shows no advertising and works with no ad networks.
Permissions and why they exist
Chrome requires extensions to declare the browser features they use. Local features use these on your device; identity is reserved for the optional sync choice:
- Storage and unlimited storage: to save your bookmarks and settings locally.
- Tabs: to read titles and addresses when you save a page or create a Session. If you explicitly enable daily snapshots or weekly scheduled Untangle, it reads eligible open tabs in the last-focused browser window at that time; scheduled Untangle also closes the tabs it has safely saved while leaving pinned and active tabs alone.
- Favicon: to display the small site icons next to your bookmarks, drawn by Chrome.
- Context menus: to add the "Save to UntangleTabs" right-click options.
- Alarms: to fire reminders and to run daily snapshots or weekly scheduled Untangle only when you enable those options.
- Notifications: to show reminders, and to report how many eligible tabs were saved and closed after a weekly scheduled Untangle that you enabled.
- Identity: to let you choose Google sign-in for optional sync and recovery. Signing in is not required for local mode.
- Bookmarks (optional): asked for only if you choose "From this browser" in Import; it reads your existing browser bookmarks once, on your request, entirely on your device, and nothing is ever sent anywhere.
Data you export
UntangleTabs lets you export your data as a JSON file so you have your own backup. This is especially important if you stay in local mode. Once you export a file, it is in your hands; importing it reads it back into local storage.
Children
UntangleTabs is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed at children.
Optional sync and recovery
Cross-device sync is a committed launch feature but is not active in the current pre-release build. Before it is enabled publicly, this policy and the in-product opt-in will state what is sent, how it is encrypted, which service stores it, how to turn sync off, how to delete the server copy, and what UntangleTabs can and cannot read. Until you explicitly turn it on, local mode remains local.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will revise the effective date at the top and describe what changed. Meaningful changes, especially any that affect where your data lives, will be called out clearly.
